The African Student Association is a student-run organization which provides a forum for students of African and non-African descent to come together and share their experiences and interests with students who hold the same values. Working towards our mission as a cultural organization intending on raising awareness of social, political, and environmental issues that affect all countries in Africa through educational and social programs is extremely rewarding as we continue to see more open dialogue about our continent in many walks of Emory. Our initiatives work to engage these communities in a dialogue on topics related to the African diaspora.
The African Student Association is fundraising for our annual Taste of Africa Benefit Gala. We have a responsibility to tell African stories and redirect appreciation towards the finer things of the continent many of us call home and continue to see often misrepresented in the media and popular culture. Our Taste of Africa will work on shining the light on African cuisine, an inclusive cast of performers from every corner of the continent, and educational components that showcase the charities our organization supports. Last year we had a large turnout of over 500 people in with attendees coming from different universities in Georgia, Emory faculty, students, staff, and alumni. This year we hope to expand and curate an even greater culturally invigorating experience for all our attendees which we anticipate to be just as large as last year's.
