As Emory Eye Center closes out our 150th Anniversary year, we are reminded that our success as a premier center for ophthalmological health and education has never been guaranteed. We have earned a national reputation because we have actively recruited and mentored greatness – in our faculty, residents, researchers, and supporters.
Our history is replete with examples.
One of our earlier department chairs, Dr. F. Phinizy Calhoun, Jr., was the first ophthalmologist in Georgia to perform surgery under a microscope. He was also the first eye doctor in the southeast to perform a corneal transplant. His grandfather – Dr. Abner Calhoun – teamed up with industrialist Andrew Carnegie to build the foundation of what is now Grady Hospital.
Our future is brimming with the same promise and optimism.
Every month, our team of more than 60 ophthalmic specialists field more than 10,000 patient visits – from infants with newly diagnosed diseases to elderly with chronic eye disorders. In 2023, our residency program – always highly competitive – was ranked #5 in the nation by Ophthalmology Times. And we have recently recruited Machelle T. Pardue, PhD to serve as our new vice chair and director of research. A champion of collaborative, translational research, Pardue has previously garnered more than $18 million in funding to explore a broad range of vision disorders and treatments. While she continues that research, she plans to expand the department’s research team.
Our supporters help us to transform this potential to a reality.
On March 22, the Emory Day of Giving, we ask you to join us by donating to either the Emory Eye Center Residents Program Fund or the Emory Eye Center Research fund. Your gift will make a difference in training clinical and surgical ophthalmologists and cutting-edge eye disease research.
