SCICOVERY's mission is to create and implement an engaging STEM education curriculum to encourage and nurture young students in their development of scientific knowledge and appreciation. SCICOVERY is driven by a group of undergraduate students at Emory who host educational workshops for students at community centers, nonprofits, and public school and further design and publish free virtual STEM activities, PowerPoint slides/worksheets, and YouTube videos for teachers all around the world to use in their classroom. The teams have been having a blast going into nearby local shelters and leading workshops in order to encourage growing children to gain an exposure to the field of science and research but, most importantly, to connect with others and the world around them and receive care and love that they deserve. The long term vision for SCICOVERY is to help children to discover and thrive in their passions in the field of STEM and do not further allow their circumstances define who they are.
Your support would significantly benefit our weekly in-person workshops that we host for young students at nearby community centers, nonprofit organizations, and public schools such as East Atlanta Kids Club and Cross Keys High School. For our workshops, we bring in materials needed for the STEM experiments or demonstrations for around 30-40 kids at the community centers where we visit (e.g. bouncing polymer ball, rock salt ice cream, animal cell jello activity). Therefore, through the funding, we will be able to enhance the quality of our workshops and expand our program for more children as we consistently strive to make our activities more accessible, engaging, and educational for students who may have limited access to such an education/exposure in the field of STEM. Not only do we focus in the field of STEM but we also try to make education accessible to all students by spearheading a tour program at Emory for high school students for an exposure to higher education and host college application/resume building workshops at nearby public schools. Through the funding, we will be able to implement those funds to host more tour program events/college application/resume building workshops where we will be able to recruit more volunteers (transportation costs), and further enhance the quality of our workshops by being able to extend the number of students that we host workshops for as we can cover more of their transportation/meal costs.
