The Citizen Science Health and Diversity (CSHD) club is focused on interacting with and mentoring local Georgia middle and high school students. Our goal is to increase diversity in STEM by motivating under-represented individuals and populations to pursue STEM careers through mentorship, research activities, and educational opportunities.
We're fundraising to fund our outreach programs, including our STEM after school program, the HealthHacks Hackathon, Emory Splash, and the Big Data Summer Academy:
- STEM Afterschool Program
- This 8-week afterschool program is held at local middle schools. The program, “Data Detectives”, focuses on teaching students how to interpret scientific data and learn the principles of the quantitative and biological sciences. Students conduct research through data mining patient data and come up with their own plans for how to use this data to make changes in their community . At the end of the program, students present their research to teachers, parents, and mentors.
- HealthHacks Hackathon
- At this annual, girls-only K-12 hackathon, students learn how to code through coding and health workshops and work in teams to create projects aimed at improving the health of their communities. In our most recent hackathon, students designed projects addressing the COVID-19 pandemic
- Emory Splash
- Emory Splash is a day-long event where middle and high school students have the opportunity to take a variety of STEM-related classes taught by Emory students. Classes are typically 45 minutes long and will cover a wide range of topics—from the physics of angry birds to the chemistry of perfume!
- Big Data Summer Academy
- Each summer, CSHD hosts and assists with various summer programs held on Emory campus or at local schools. Programs can be anywhere from 1-day to multiple weeks long, and students are assisted by mentors to learn how to research and communicate scientific information.
