The Emory Global Diabetes Research Center (EGDRC) is an ambitious cross-campus program with the vision of Improving the lives of people and populations globally and domestically through interdisciplinary diabetes research. EGDRC’s mission is to alleviate suffering from diabetes, which affects over half a billion people worldwide through innovative research into causes and cures, prevention and treatment, environmental and policy measures.
Funds will be used for student scholarships and stipends, to support recruitment of postdoctoral fellows and faculty, and for innovative research.
EGDRC is a 21st century interdisciplinary research and public health ecosystem that offers cutting-edge training and practicum opportunities to undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students to work with the best of faculty and health partners domestically and across 21 countries worldwide.
The Precision-CARRS Cohort is a massive study, involving 22,000 people, carefully phenotyped, and has thus far provided opportunities for over 100 students and young scientists. Drs. Mary Beth Weber, Lisa Staimez, Unjali Gujral, and Elizabeth Rhodes all got their PhDs from Emory working on studies, such as Precision-CARRS or one of numerous EGDRC projects, and are now faculty and investigators in their own right, doing cutting edge research and teaching. EGDRC currently supports three undergraduate students, nearly a dozen MPH students, seven doctoral students, and ten postdoctoral fellows. A vast number of MPH students have spent time at EGDRC and at its partner sites in India, gained practicum experiences, and also dissertation opportunities.
