Institute of African Studies

The Institute of African Studies is one of the leading centers for the study of Africa in the United States. IAS offers a community of scholars and a lively focus of activity to persons interested in Africa. It has core faculty members drawn from the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Law, the Candler School of Theology, and Oxford. The Institute promotes interdisciplinary teaching and research on Africa and administers an undergraduate major and minor and an honors program.

The Institute coordinates graduate training in African Studies at Emory with an ongoing seminar in African studies. IAS hosts visiting African scholars, and sponsors conferences, exhibitions, and special events on Africa. With its resources and activities, the Institute of African Studies encourages and supports rich and diverse Africanist teaching, scholarship, and outreach.

We are fundraising to offer undergraduate student awards:

  • Citizenship: An award that recognizes student participation in our Fall and Spring seminar series of workshops, lectures, and talks with visiting artists, writers, activists.
  • Best undergraduate research paper: An award that celebrates undergraduate research excellence in African Studies.
  • Summer research awards
    • For one or two undergraduate students in African Studies with a summer research project(s) on the African continent. This award will be used for travel, lodging, and research expenses.
    • To fund summer research or conference travel by a graduate student in African studies to the African continent. This award will be used for travel, lodging, and conference or research expenses.
