Friends of Dance

The Emory Dance and Movement Studies Program develops skilled and uniquely expressive individuals who move and act with intelligence and sensitivity, think independently, and value original thought and diversity.

We create vibrant explorations of movement for all skill levels, encouraging students to move freely, develop a mindful practice, create original work, and discover interdisciplinary connections. As one of the leading dance programs in the South, we are an incubator for innovative, transformative dance making—fostering each student's creative, intellectual, and communicative powers within the larger context of a liberal arts education.

The study of dance and movement at Emory University is a serious academic discipline with an emphasis on developing artistry, discovering body-mind connections, and expanding body intelligence that will transfer into a variety of professions.

The Friends of Dance at Emory is a support organization committed to enhancing the individual and collective pursuit of excellence in dance. The Friends of Dance supports the following initiatives:

  • The Sally A. Radell Friends of Dance Scholarship for Summer Dance Study provides funding for majors and minors to study in the United States or abroad with notable practicing artists, dance programs, and dance companies.
  • The Friends of Dance Mini-Grants encourage dance majors or minors to research movement, somatics, dance writing, dance therapy, or health sciences at short-term workshops, conferences, and intensives.
  • The Friends of Dance Lecture Series encompasses a wide selection of topics, ranging from feminist ballet to dance on camera to hip hop dance and culture. Notable speakers have included Dr. Sally Banes, David Dorfman, Dr. Thomas F. De Frantz, and Deborah Jowitt.
