Ethics and Servant Leadership Program

The Center for Ethics helps students, professionals, and the public confront and understand ethical issues in health, technology, the arts, the environment, and the life sciences. We teach, publish, and offer programming that includes public engagement as part of our commitment to respond to issues and concerns important not just to the academic community but to the Atlanta community and beyond.

Ethics and Servant Leadership (EASL): The Ethics and Servant Leader Summer Internship program provides students with an intensive and structured hands-on experience for three months each summer. Our program has grown, both in reputation and number of applicants, and we face the challenge of limited program acceptance for qualified and deserving students. We depend on the power of gifts from people like you to ensure our students can access life-changing experiences - regardless of their financial resources - and create positive change in the world.

"Throughout medical and graduate school, I have participated in many experiences that have led me to reflect and build upon my EASL experience. I was accepted to a fellowship to study medical ethics in Auschwitz in the context of the Holocaust. I have compiled a report and worked with the university to pass a new family support policy for graduate students with children. I was part of the Committee to Establish Principles in Renaming, the results of which led Yale to rename John C. Calhoun College after Grace Hopper. I am deeply grateful to EASL for teaching me to reflect on the ethics of any situation or conflict. It has not only provided me a source of creativity for pragmatic problem-solving at an administrative and policy level but also helped me become a better leader for my peers and doctor to my patients. I wanted to share with you how important a role those experiences have played in shaping my life." - Wendy Xiao Herman, MD, PhD, Boston Children’s Hospital
