409 Juvenile Mentorship Program

Youth in juvenile detention centers often experience gaps in their education that can leave them unprepared to return to school upon release. Education and mentorship are important factors that can potentially prevent youth from falling behind. Our organization seeks to tutor and mentor these youth to stay on track with their coursework and fill in any content gaps in any core academic subjects. We want to ensure that incarcerated youth receive the same level of academic support as other students. We hope that Emory students can serve as positive role models for the youth at the DeKalb Regional Youth Detention Center and provide one-on-one and small group academic instruction that will allow them to excel.

We are fundraising to purchase laptops for the students of the RYDC. The Dekalb RYDC currently has no access to laptops; therefore, virtual mentorship and tutoring are unavailable. Through your generous financial and kindhearted support, the students at Dekalb RYDC will be able to reach their full academic potential and thrive to be future leaders of the Greater Atlanta Area. With the laptops, volunteers are open to choosing between in-person and virtual tutoring. RYDC students will have a variety of tutoring times to choose from and be able to be mentored more frequently.
