Office of Sustainability Initiatives

The Office of Sustainability Initiatives manages an intern program which provides Emory students real-world experiences through which they develop research, data, outreach, programming, and communication skills transferable to future careers. Based on student interests and OSI’s needs, interns work on a variety of projects throughout the semester in the areas of academics & research, biodiversity & landscapes, climate solutions, green buildings, energy, food & dining, purchasing, social justice, transportation, waste, water, and wellbeing. The sole Emory Student Employee of the Year for 2018, Kryn Dykema, and 2019, Kristen Kaufman, were both OSI interns.

The Impact of Your Gift

Gifts to OSI support our ability to expand the experiential learning possibilities available to students.

The student interns’ work contributes to the tri-annual STARS report that informs Emory’s Gold rating with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), as well as Emory’s recent ranking of #6 out of 853 schools in The Princeton Review’s 2022 Guide to Green Colleges. Emory has earned a Campus Sustainability Achievement Award from AASHE for OSI’s WaterHub Student Docents Program, staffed by student interns. Emory has also been ranked by Business Insider as a top 25 school for students who want to change the world, citing our sustainability community and the involvement of students as key factors.
