We are Emory Physicians for Human Rights, or the Georgia Human Rights Clinic (GHRC). We partnered with local law firms and advocacy groups to begin conducting asylum evaluations for asylum seekers and have formed collaborations with over one dozen non-profit organizations throughout Georgia. We work with physicians from various medical backgrounds to provide services including in-person and virtual asylum evaluations. Additionally, we’ve grown and now offer assistance on non-asylum cases, including detainees and those applying for T Visa, U Visa, and VAWA claims. We’re grateful for your interest in our program!
Our mission is to ensure all residents of Georgia, regardless of legal status, have access to basic rights including but not limited to: healthcare, legal representation, and personal and familial support.
This mission is accomplished through working with legal organizations to conduct asylum evaluations, review medical records and write accompanying bond letters for detained individuals.
PHR will advocate for the provision of adequate medical care in detention facilities for vulnerable individuals and families.
We will source and connect those we serve with resources in their local communities that can improve their wellbeing and help address social determinants of health.
We are fundraising to pay interpreters for our forensic medical evaluations - our clients typically cannot afford interpreters. Interpretation is an ethical imperative, and in-person interpretation can ease the process of an invasive, stressful and potentially traumatizing physical exam.
We are also fundraising to conduct simulation sessions, to teach medical students, residents, and fellows, the process of doing forensic medical evaluations. By training more future physicians in these exams, we can expand access to this key part of legal cases for asylum seekers!
