Latino Medical Student Association

We are the Emory chapter of the Latino Medical Student Association, a national organization that aims to unite and empower current and future physicians through service, mentorship, and education to advocate for the improved health of the Hispanic & Latina/o/x community in the United States.

Our goals as a chapter include unifying Latinx medical students, actively promoting recruitment and retention of Latinx students at all levels, educating medical students on Latinx health issues, advocating for the rights of Latinos in health care, and promoting volunteerism in the Latinx community.

We are devoted to nurturing our LMSA community within the Emory SOM and encouraging our members to pursue professional development opportunities through LMSA regional and national conferences. Your generous donation will help fund LMSA student leaders to attend these conferences in order to maintain our standing as a recognized chapter. Notably, Emory University was a Diamond Sponsor of the 2023 LMSA National Conference hosted in Atlanta, and this was the first ever LMSA National conference our chapter was able to attend due to it being held in our home city. The networking and educational sessions were invaluable to our members and empowered our chapter to pursue endeavors like the formation of our LMSA Medical Spanish Taskforce, a committee of medical students investigating a path to a dual-role curriculum for health professions students to navigate the complexities of simultaneously serving as a Bilingual Provider and a Qualified Interpreter in the clinical setting. This taskforce recently had the chance to present our work at the 2024 National Association for Medical Spanish (NAMS) Conference in Chicago, IL: "Spanish Language Skills Among Medical Students at a Single Institution in Georgia: An Initial Medical Education Needs Assessment."
