Volunteer Medical Interpretation Services

VMIS is an organization that strives to promote medical literacy in underprivileged communities by providing voluntary medical interpretation services from its certified medical interpreters. Students seeking to dismantle language barriers between healthcare providers and patients with low English proficiency work to attain medical interpretation certification through VMIS and ALTA Language Services, Inc. Upon receiving said certification, student interpreters commit to serving their community by offering their time and services free of charge. The volunteer work of VMIS student interpreters enables patients with low English proficiency to speak and advocate for themselves by providing them with a voice to which they would otherwise not have access.

Funds for VMIS are primarily used to subsidize part of the cost of our interpreters' training. We also use funds to provide transportation to and from the clinics we volunteer at, housing during volunteer trips to rural Georgia where we serve the farmworker community, and bonding events for our interpreters.
