UMMI serves refugee mothers and incarcerated mothers, as well as other women in marginalized communities. We dedicate services and hold volunteer events for motherhood, maternity health, and pregnant women, specifically in the incarcerated and refugee communities. Through collaborations, we create events and volunteer opportunities in the fields of healthcare, education, and cultural competency. Events include trainings to be certified to provide support to refugee mothers in labor, transporting refugee mothers to doctor appointments and advocating for them through interpretations and clarifications, fundraising and packaging items for incarcerated mothers and women, and leading discussions with guest speakers of different organizations and backgrounds. These experiences will be not only rewarding for our undergraduate students, but also eye-opening into the fields of activism, healthcare, literacy, and the motherhood experience, as interested students will likely delve into careers of public health, medicine, law, literacy, advising, social work, and more.
We will use funds to primarily jumpstart our Financial Literacy Workshop at Metro Transitional Center, equipping residents with the skills they need to transition to financial independence and self-sufficiency. The funds will be used to cover the costs of developing a comprehensive curriculum that addresses crucial topics such as budgeting, saving, managing debt, understanding credit, and planning for future financial goals. Additionally, we will use donations to secure the necessary materials, including workbooks, calculators, and other resources that will enhance the learning experience.
