Slow Food Emory is a local campus chapter of the international Slow Food Movement. We aim to address food insecurity, fight food waste, and spread nutritional education through a few initiatives. 1) Every Sunday, we rescue surplus produce from a farmers market to make into healthy meals for patients receiving cancer treatment. 2) We rescue dining hall food that would otherwise be thrown away and pack it into meals to distribute to students and staff, and are now offering incentives to students who do not have plate waste. 3) We demo seasonal recipes at our Emory Farmers market to encourage students to cook for themselves. 4) We have pop-up events for students to have fun making a dish together and enjoying yummy food.
We mainly need funding so we can continue to purchase containers for our food recoveries. These containers are expensive because they are compostable, and we go through a few thousand per semester. We also need funding to purchase supplemental ingredients for our weekly Sunday cooking, so we can provide a balanced meal for residents.
