Emory anthropologists study the full spectrum of what it means to be human. Investigating pressing issues facing nations, communities, and scientific inquiry today, their work makes a vital contribution to contemporary intellectual conversation at Emory and beyond. As a scholarly community, we train future researchers, academics, and civic leaders who make a strong impact on our increasingly complex and interconnected world.
Using ethnographic, computational, digital, archaeological, historical, biological, comparative, and experimental research methods, we are committed to integrative and empirically grounded approaches to exploring the human experience. Our teaching prepares students to “think outside the box,” to approach intellectual questions with curiosity and passion, using scientific knowledge from peoples and cultures around the world. We help students develop the analytical and communicative skills to address contemporary dilemmas from cultural, historical, and evolutionary perspectives. Our graduates have gone on to successful careers in international development, public health, education, diplomacy, law, social justice activism, business, entrepreneurship, and medicine.
We want to extend experiential learning in our classes and to expand resources for undergraduate student research.
We also seek to support our BA and BS majors in research projects that explore interests ranging from human origins and evolution, to health and illness to social justice and inequality.
