Health and Development in Guatemala (HDG) is a global health organization that uses an interdisciplinary approach to provide healthcare and education in a culturally appropriate manner. Every year, we take Emory students and medical professionals to Guatemala to deliver healthcare with the goal of connecting patients to existing local resources, capacity building of local clinics, and establishing partnerships so that international medical teams are no longer needed. Throughout the year, there are several ongoing projects including the creation of a research curriculum on STEM topics, social initiative teams that help students who lack resources to continue their education, and these trips to a rural Guatemalan community. Our club has the support of local organizations in Guatemala and is truly working to support them and create changes that are sustainable. HDG values social justice and personal and professional excellence through scientific inquiry and an understanding that health is a human right. With this philosophy, we invite the entire Emory community to partner with us in our journey!
The Impact of Your Gift
Each year HDG invites Emory doctors, medical students, and undergraduate students to Sololá, Guatemala to provide clinics and educational workshops on topics such as nutrition, exercise, mental health, and water sanitation. Volunteers also participate in community development initiatives by installing clean cookstoves and water filters in Guatemalan homes. These funds will go towards this clinical trip or towards our research trip, where students are investigating STEM education and water quality in Guatemala.
