Since the COVID-19 outbreak began, the Emory Vaccine Center, the largest and most comprehensive academic vaccine research center in the world, has been at the forefront of the fight to develop new vaccines and treatments in record time. The Center—one of the first and largest sites to conduct clinical trials of the Moderna vaccine—continues to share important findings on the immune response to the virus. Presently, the Emory Vaccine Center has multiple studies underway focusing on several new vaccines, other drug treatments and better understanding the duration of natural immunity.
The mission of the Emory Vaccine Center is to improve human health by conducting fundamental and clinical research leading to the development of effective vaccines against infectious and chronic diseases of global importance. Since its establishment in 1995, it has been an epicenter of vaccine research focused on vaccines for treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Zika, and now COVID-19 with more than 300 scientists researching, developing, and testing vaccines. This research has led to additional discoveries being used in cancer immunotherapy treatments, organ transplants and autoimmune diseases as our knowledge of the immune system increases.
