The Michael C. Carlos Museum is one of the most dynamic university museums in the United States. The Museum serves a tripartite mission at Emory, as a major research and teaching branch of the university, a custodian of artifacts and works of art from diverse cultures spanning five continents and nine millennia, and as an educational center for the campus and larger community. The breadth of world cultures represented in the works of art at the Carlos Museum allows us to find commonalities and honor differences.
EMORY STUDENTS ARE AT THE CENTER of the Carlos Museum. The Museum was first created for them in 1919 and 100 years later, our chief goal continues to be providing Emory students with three-dimensional and experiential opportunities to study, explore, question, and enjoy the objects from many cultures. Through internships, curatorial opportunities, and research experiences, our students can make a deep dive into how objects were made, why materials matter, what and how imagery communicates, and the uses and meanings of works of art, which can change over their very long lives.
For Emory Day of Giving, we are highlighting the Michael C. Carlos Museum Student Fund.
Gifts to the Museum Student Fund will ensure we have the resources to offer unique opportunities to all Emory students, regardless of their field of study. Through programs, coursework, internships, and fellowships, Emory students assist in conservation treatments (see photo above), create in-gallery learning materials such as for SmARTy Packs for children, take courses co-led by museum staff and Emory faculty, and research the collection. Programs such as Student Studio offer drop-in hands-on art making experiences for all students during the school year. We are a problem-solving, knowledge-driven, creative place on campus. From reconstructing an ancient vessel in an art history class to drawing objects as a medical school student, hands-on experiences at the Carlos make an Emory education distinctive and memorable.
Please donate today to support student engagement at the Carlos Museum. Your contribution will provide funding for opportunities for Emory students to connect with collections, exhibitions, and each other. Hear from students directly about how the museum has enhanced their education while at Emory, read their stories, and learn more about specific offerings for university students here.
We appreciate the generosity of alumni and friends like you.
